So I have been working with the printers for a while now. I have some prints, but not all them because there are some problems with a couple of my files. It is all good though, the prints I do have look spectacular!! I can’t wait to have my finished product. Print Possible has been working with me on it, and they are really great at customer service. So this printing process has been great.
I did work on my business card. I chose to label myself as the social butterfly that loves to explore because it is on my portfolio site, and I don’t want to limit myself to one job position. I am not completely sure what exactly I want to do. I might want to go into strategy, or account management. With these positions being different directions, I want my personal card to be simple with my basic contact information. I chose to create my card through moo.com because I love this one design. It has a picture by numbers on the backside, which goes with my interactive book. I love the black & white element of the card because it is simple and classic. Here are some screen shots of the card. Each card has a different picture on the back, so it makes it more interesting for me. Haha.

No, this is not about smoking things. This post is about an event I went to.
Last Friday night I went to my friend’s art show. It was the first time the show was solely his work. The show was held at D-Structure on lower Haight. It was so cool! His prints glow in the dark!!!! They are prints of different areas of San Francisco and street signs. I am going to get one for sure. It has been pretty impressive to watch his collection grow.

So this morning, I met with Tyler Wilson who is a Senior Digital Strategist at Tribal DDB. We met up and went to Blue Bottle Coffee. We talked about his job, and how he got started. He changed careers, became an intern, and now he is a senior strategist. He said that he got a job in strategy by interning and then moving up from there.
For me, the most important thing we talked about was the fact that you have to stand out, and be an export on something that sets you apart from the rest. Once you have established it, then figure out how to let your personal brand image to help move you forward.
So I’ve been working on my physical portfolio for a few weeks now. I am in the final stages. Woooo! hehe. I have been trying to balance the idea of professionalism and crafty interactiveness. I think I am doing an okay job at it. The idea of my book is that it is supposed to be a summary of my work, where as my website is the complete view of my work. The book is physically interactive with pullouts. I want my book to be an experience that the viewer wont forget minutes afterwards.
I have also had the idea that my business card is also interactive. I found one on moo.com that has a game on the back of it. I just dont know what words I want to use yet to describe myself.
Here are some peaks at parts of my book.

I picked my font, Proxima Nova and Caecilia LT Std . I just have to find a printer and have someone edit my writing. Should I print my portfolio at my home epson printer? Or should I print it professionally?
I headed out into the city to meet up with a friend to watch the parade down Market Street. We had some time before it started, so we were just walking around climbing the hills of downtown. My friend, Yash, saw someone with green spray painted hair, so we ended up going to Walgreens to pick some up.
Immediately out of the store, I sprayed a green Mohawk on his head. And we walked down to Market. He got so much attention. One was because even though he is Indian, he had Irish pride. Second, was because of the green hair. Once we got to Market, I got a Speakeasy and we watched the parade. I ended up spraying parts my hair green too. At the bar on Market Street, we had many people coming up to us trying to figure out how we got green hair. So we ended up showing them the can, and sprayed a few peoples hair.
Later, we had a line waiting for people getting their hair sprayed. We made a lot of friends that we really wouldn’t have if we weren’t open to sharing our green hair and Irish pride. It gave us, and the strangers, and since of togetherness and camaraderie. For, we hung out with these people all day, all because of this 3 dollar temporary color spray can. It was very unexpected, and cool to watch the size of the group grow from two to ten.
For me, it just re-instated that if you are open to others and connections, it makes the experience much more fulfilling than you ever thought it would be. Also, things happen that you would expect.
On a side note, here are some cute pictures from the parade:

The little girls were so cute in the dresses.

So this last weekend, i have been slaving away on my computer creating my portfolio site. I made it in wordpress, and I bought a theme and domain name. I thought it would make it easier to do the site on wordpress because they had a theme with the idea of site I had envisioned. It was funny though, I was determined to figure out the website without looking at the instructions. Then I got really stuck and the upset, so I looked at the instructions, but I couldn’t understand them. So I went back to pushing buttons and messing with settings, and finally figured it out. So I learned that instructions aren’t always helpful what you want them to be.
I know I have a more changed to make, but the site is under construction and I got an understanding of how it works. I am closer to having something to show to agencies. :) yay. Oh and I updated my Linkedin.

Wooo! Haha. Yall have heard of Meetup.com, yeah?
Well I was walking around the city taking pictures with my pinhole camera and talking to artists and venders around powell & market and also around union square. The pinhole camera raised a bunch of eyebrows, so conversations with strangers came easy.
Long story short…I went to a meetup on Mission Street for the Psychedelic Society of San Francisco. The 2 hour, free meetup was very interesting. An anthropologist from Brazil, Beatriz Caiuby Labate, was speaking about Ayahwaska.
It is a religion down in South America, basically. Aya means spirit and soul. Waska means vine, rope, and Liana. It is a combination of two natural ingredients.
She talked about the different cultural traditions of using ayahwaska for each region around the world, the legalities, and the science/health side of things.
It was very interesting to hear an anthropologist give a presentation. I found it very interesting because it was something I hadn’t heard before. She really knew the role of ayahwaska in each society she spoke about. You could tell she really is involved.
The people in the audience were very nice and friendly. Everyone there attended to learn what the Beatriz was expressing. There were many different types of people there too. I kinda want to keep on going to these monthly meetings to see if it is the same people that attend each month. I want to get to know the people and maybe make some archetypes of the meetup group.
So I have been reaching out to people in Oslo and emailing out informational interviews. In retrospect, it is the same process and whatnot compared to San Francisco. They have multiple interviews and sometimes there is an assignment. They look for people with a good understanding of communication and business strategy. They also look for people who work creatively and show their usefulness.
I have also been reaching out to agencies and just asking them if they have any entry level positions. I have gotten replies from most of the agencies and they have been just a no, we dont have any open positions. Some wondered why I was even applying because I am so far away. I did get one agency that said that I should email them my resume, but in Norwegian.
At first this was great news, all I had to do is just translate my resume. But then the next line of the email was that they expect that all their employees speak and write Norwegian.
I am ready for a change, and I want to go to Norway really bad. It is so beautiful there and I really enjoy the culture. In fact I fell in love with it while I was there. I don’t know for sure what I am going to do about this. But I do know that I really want to put my best foot forward.
I’ve been studying norwegian, and I pick it up pretty easily when practicing. I am just not that confident with it when I try to recall what I learned. I think I will need more time to master it, it is a really difficult language. So I think I am going to stay in SF for a while, then go out there after I have gained experience and a better understanding of the language.
A stench of regret filled that wretched place of his. Lost and confused, much like his 5th-floor walk up. Wondering around with no place to go, you would think a single male living in The City that Never Sleeps would have something better to do. Lying on the floor wedged between a coffee table and what once used to be a couch, Austin has forever been folded into the fetal position. Knees brought into his chest, Austin tries to find his center. His eyes were searching around the room for something familiar to bring him back. Back from where his tripped-out mind had taken him before. Who knew that a small tab of paper would make a 160-pound man react like a confused, lonely child lost his a dark corner. Looking at the scattered piles of dirty laundry across the floor and the spilt milk from last Tuesday, Austin’s mind moves in circles. The broken lamp was meshing with the water stained ceiling, and then separating again. Tattered objects and colors floating and dancing around much like a smooth flowing kaleidoscope. Listening to the mixture of Tricky and the sounds from cars honking from a world that seemed so far away, Austin looks at his ancient stereo system. It was his most prized possession. It gave him a gift of comfort and a sense of identity for many years. Watching the speakers glide back and fourth to the trip-hop vibrating beats, Austin’s mind finds an epiphany. Suddenly the world seemed to come together because of the music, everything was starting to make sense. Listening more and more to the slow, mellow beats, Austin’s mind started to straighten out. The confusion was fading away. Again, his music had saved him from loosing his mind. Once more, his stereo saved that lonely, baffled man from oblivion.
Last POV, I talked about the new Google private policy. I feel like it is going to change some things, and this new app is a domino effect of it. Trendspotting reported at the beginning of the month on the changes in the market from mobile devices. It mentions protection, but in the sense of physical protection for the phone.
There are more and more apps that track mobile marketing networks, creating internal protection.
What I think is nice is that mobile ads are pretty targeted. Others feel they are being violated.
There is a new mobile app, Lookout, out there that shows phone holders which marketing companies are on your phone. Also, it tells you what information networks are using from your phone.
The fault I find in this new app is that you can not delete information or cookies. Basically this app is cotton fluff, that doesn’t necessarily make any definite changes. It has the appearance of doing so. It basically just lets the phone holder know what is going on.
There are other ad blocking apps like AdAway, which I think is more interesting. You can actually disable networks, and make exceptions when desired.
I think that there will be a growing trend of people trying to protect their information from phones. It might be harder to reach people via mobile phone advertising. It kind of is already because there is such an abundance of mobile ads.

Have yall heard about the new Mac OSX Mountain Lion?
It is molding to become closer to the ipad interface. Also social media will be easier with Twitter being intertwined, instead of ichat. It will also make sharing on Vimeo and Flickr easier.
I wonder what effect that will have on social media and social media advertising. Will it make it even more popular?
Also, this will give the opportunity for people to have more of their lives on display on the internet. I am not to sure that is a good thing, but it is their choice to publish.
I am interested to see how this will all pan out! I am mostly interested how this will affect social media advertising, will it change or stay the same?

I am in the Book Arts class in the Fine Arts department for my last elective class. It is actually one of my favorite classes at the Academy. It is really fun learning how to make different kinds of books. Last week, we learned how to do several different kinds of folds. I was inspired by one fold we learned, the Shepard’s purse. When I opened it, it reminded me of teeth from a dragon.
For our homework assignment, we had to randomly turn to a page in the dictionary and point to a word. I pointed to “Rostrum.” We also had to randomly pick a picture that a classmate brought, mine was of a peacock.
I was determined to make a dragon, so I made a sea dragon. :) Complete with a poem by Richard Kipling, “Sussex,” and googley eyes.
(Googley eyes aren’t shown, but they are on the pink dragon head.)

Google’s new private policy has bloggers, and even my sister, talking. They have changed their previous private policy. The policy makes data and ads more relevant to targeted consumers. Over time, it learns what topics are applicable to each user.
Opposers of this new change have been claiming that it isn’t fair. In this new policy change, users can not opt out of this decision. The FTC is actually being sued by Epic for not enforcing their previous order about disclosing personal information.
I think that Google’s new private policy is okay. I personally think that this process has already been happening. The only difference now they are more public about it. I don’t want everything I do be monitored on the internet, but I am kind of excited to see what ads they think I would be interested in. haha.
